ETJC In the News: Men Speak Out: Views on Gender, Sex and Power
Amanullah De Sondy a professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Miami discusses ETJC and the Toronto Unity Mosque in his chapter, “Searching for the Colourful Faces of Muslim Men” in Men Speak Out: Views on Gender, Sex, and Power, edited by Sheila Tarrant, published by Routledge Press in 2013.
“…in Toronto, El-Farouk Khaki, a leading gay Muslim activist and lawyer, works tirelessly on issues of gender equality and sexual orientation, and progressive Islam. Khaki, along with his partner Troy Jackson and their friend Laury Silvers, established el-Tawhid Juma Circle, the first mosque for all gender identities and sexual orientations. This has led to the founding of a number of inclusive Muslim congregations around Canada and the United States. These congregations play a significant role in welcoming Muslims who don’t feel comfortable in “mainstream” mosques.”
