ETJC In the News: Muslims Talking About Queer Sexuality
In his recent piece for the Huffington post, “Why All [sic] Muslims are Talking about Queer Sexuality,” Junaid Jahangir discusses the growing openness in the Muslim community to discuss queer issues, including the fact that “there is a consistent pattern of support for same-sex marriage amongst Muslim politicians across North America and Europe.” Keith Ellison of the US is one notable example. He mentions the establishment of queer-affirming mosques and communities such as ETJC mosques (in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and London [Ontario]) and those associated with Muslims for Progressive Values. I would add the Inclusive Mosque Initiative in the UK as well as the Nur Ashki Jerrahi communities in the US and Mexico.
